Next, calculate the benefits of each option, including immediate and future gains like revenue growth, savings, or efficiency improvements. Also, consider intangible benefits such as improved employee morale or brand reputation. Try to express these benefits in monetary terms for easy comparison.

5. Calculate the Net Benefits

Now, subtract the costs from the benefits to calculate the net benefit (or net present value, NPV) of each option. This step helps you understand the overall value of each choice in today’s dollars. Don’t forget to account for the time value of money by applying a discount rate that reflects future risks.

6. Compare and Make Your Decision

Once you’ve calculated the net benefits for each option, compare them side by side. The alternative with the highest net benefit (or NPV) is typically the best choice. However, remember to consider other factors like the reliability of your estimates, potential risks, and the feasibility of implementing the chosen option.

A cost-benefit analysis is a valuable tool for making informed decisions that maximize value and minimize risk. By following these steps, you can effectively compare alternatives and make data-driven choices.
