Today’s world is full of distractions and focus can be hard to achieve.

However, Imagine you lived in the late 1800’s Early 1900’s 1867 - 1923 to be exact and you are a black man.  Born shortly after the abolishment of slavery.

You developed a curiosity for animals.  You wanted to know how they worked. Throughout your process, you are told no.  Or simply do not have access to resources to allow you to do the work you love.

Can you imagine not being allowed to walk into a room with others that are doing the same work that you are doing?  Of no fault of your own.

Think about it this way.  Say you want to become a teacher.  It seems simply enough but you are not allowed into a classroom to learn how to teach. It's like knocking on a lock door with no key, while the people inside are doing what you want and while actively ignoring you.

In spite of this you become a pioneer and one of the most respected scientists in your field.

That was the reality for Charles Henry Turner, a pioneering African-American scientist. He had every roadblock you could imagine.  However, Mr. Turner has one thing on his side.  His secret weapon.  

Focus. 

Turner never wavered from his passion for learning and discovery.  HIs field of Choice Biology.  Is the area of study animals more specifically insects.

Turner’s Breakthrough

Insects Can Hear Sounds

Turner was the first person to prove insects can hear and distinguish different sounds.  Although common knowledge now.  His focus challenged assumptions on animal intelligence.  

What makes this remarkable is that he did it without access to proper labs or support.  This points to his ability to maintain laser-sharp focus despite immense societal barriers.

First Black Person to earn a Ph.D in Zooology.

 He didn’t let obstacles define his story. Instead, he turned every limitation into an opportunity to innovate. His focus on research and discovery propelled him forward, earning him a lasting place in the history of science.
