Own Your Future
How often have you heard this phrase? How many times have you said it?
Let me provide a scenario that I recently experienced.
I was watching a video. It was the story of a woman who bought a table in a garage sale for $25. The owner wanted $30 but she only had $25. An agreement was made on the $25 and both parties are happy.
As I write this, I realize there are 2 lessons in this story. I will create part 2 to make sure I keep each article short.
The new owner was now at an antique show seeing if she made a good purchase.
You know how the show goes, the person gives it a look. Points out some key features and then shocks the new owner with the actual value.
In this case, it was between 2 to 3 hundred thousand dollars. She was delighted with an almost I’m going to faint move. Now here is the point of all of this.
My wife… said… Ya, but she has to find someone willing to buy it and walks out the room.
The interesting thing is the video kept going… It said the women went to the auction house and decided to see what they could get for it. The bidding ended at around $400K.
I went to my wife right after and said. You missed the best part… She actually found a new buyer that paid 2 times the estimated value.
So here is the lesson:
How often do we stop at “Ya but” and walk away from the value? You might use different phrasing:
But how…
That would not work…
I can’t…
That’s for those people, not me…
That’s not real...
That’s impossible…
Fill in your phrase of choice when your limiting beliefs raise their hand and say, what about me?
That's what this is. A belief that limits your ability to experience something of value.
We all have them. It is usually because we cannot imagine in this case, finding something we purchase for $25 and receiving a $400K paycheck in return. A 999% return on her initial investment.
What if that woman would have thought?
The person sold it to me for $25. No way this is worth anything.
What if after being told what the value was she said. Ya but who would pay that much for this thing I only paid $25.
What if the woman did not believe she could get it for $25 and walked away when the seller said $30?
It seems most of the things I’ve written lately have been about Faith. It is my view that Faith is the beginning of everything.
Faith is after all the only evidence we have of things we cannot or experience.
Here is the exercise for next week.
Pay attention to how you respond to new ideas and opportunities.
Pay attention to the idea or opportunity and the limiting beliefs that come shortly after.
Journal about the idea and all the limiting beliefs that come right after it.
Then think of how you can move through each of the beliefs. In other words, create a plan to discover the merit of each belief.
Limiting beliefs is not always wrong but writing them down and working through each one by developing a plan to move through that belief is the way to creating the life you are meant to live.
The more you do this the better you become at overcoming your limiting beliefs.
And you get to one of my favorite mottos. “Do It Anyway!”
Think about how you can override your limiting beliefs with critical thinking instead. To critically consider the possibilities of an idea before you … Well … Kill It.
It is in the possibilities where your dream life is.
